What Newly Weds Never Think

By Wesley Houp

You are not

a failed parent,

my love.

That our daughter

stomps out

and says I hate you

is a sign

that we gave her

emotional agency.

That our son

emerges periodically

and complains

about dish chores

is evidence

that he understands

Marx and feels

guilt.

Let us sip

our wine

and rub noses

like we did

three decades ago

when we were

young and childless

and ready

to burn down the castle.
