Overheard: #7

Tuesday, 7:20, inbound,
it’s an ownership shakeup at a Section 8 complex,
cosmetic patches to poor plumbing —
and rent’s destined to rise.
A day later

same inbound,
working wife riding
a 12th straight morning
commute passionately coaxes
her single pawn-store clerk
put yourself out there
a bar, a bowling alley, a church
shit
something.
By Thursday morning

6:50 outbound, county precinct data
from Tuesday’s election
delivered concisely between Sixth and Twelfth
by a man in work khaki.
On the return

7:20 inbound, two cardboard hustlers
schlepping it to work
at some high-volume interchange
set things straight for the lone backseat rider.
Them lazy ones don’t
get moving until late morning
track mall-rats, work alone, stay broke
says partner one.

Rise early
claim your place
work in teams
you make double any $9 Rally job
I promise you that
chimes partner two

as I ring the bell
and step down
into my own professed world
of lattes, lecture, and heavy grading.
