The Great Mistake

By Wesley Houp

When all the gods were animals,
the sacrament was survival.
It was easier to believe.
And more believable
than textual myth.
Paleolithic humans
could carry
the gods inside
their bellies,
wear them on
their backs during
spring migrations,
paint them in caves
for posterity,
and leave the outline
of their hands
as testament.

The great mistake
happened when
the image of hands
became god.
