Devine Carama helps open the Lyric

The reopening of the historic Lyric Theatre has created a major buzz throughout the city, especially in the African American community. The Lyric, whose stage once hosted artists such as Red Foxx, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald, is now back in business hosting hip hop artists such as Devine Carama, bringing artistic diversity to this historical landmark. As the revitalization of Lexington’s East End begins to make major headlines, I find myself asking the question: The Lyric Theatre has reopened…now what about the Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden?

Isaac Burns Murphy was born in 1861 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Before his death in 1896 he became a legend, winning three Kentucky Derbies and leaving behind a legacy unmatched more than one hundred years later. Interest in educating the community about Murphy’s accomplishments was sparked some three years ago. Continue reading »
